[Class 7(vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] A valve-actuating gear is constructed so that when the engine is operating at the correct speed the valve is actuated mainly by its reciprocating mass which is resiliently mounted to produce this effect, the amplitude of its motion being kept up by a small intermittently-applied force. This force may be applied by (a) mechanical means-e.g. by an engine driven cam; (b) cylinder pressure, the valve being masked to enhance the pressure effect; or (c) electrically by connecting the valve to the core of an electromagnet actuated by an alternating current. The resilient mounting may comprise opposed springs, the frequency of vibration of which may be varied, or opposed pneumatic pistons. The engine is motored up to the correct speed, when a governor may be arranged to disconnect the motor. A converted enginedriven generator may be used for this purpose.
