Abstract

653,314. Antenna system. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Oct. 28, 1946, No. 31934. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vii)] A directional antenna system adapted to scan in one plane, comprises a radiating element situated at the focus of a parabolic reflector which is mounted to be rotatable about the element, and the transmission line which is connected to the element passes through an axial opening in the rotatable bearing of the reflector. Fig. 1 shows a suitable arrangement of the element and transmission line. A vertical half-wave antenna 10 is supplied with very high-frequency energy from transmission line 13, 14, via a matching transformer consisting of a quarter-wave transmission line section 15, 16. To reduce currents to ground through the outer conductors 16, 14, a tubular conductive member 17 surrounds, and is coextensive with, outer conductor 16. The transmission line section formed by conductors 16 and 17 is short-circuited at its end remote from the antenna. An insulating plug 20 and a shield 21 may be provided by a material such as polystyrene. Fig. 2 shows the rotatable antenna system. The antenna unit 10, corresponding to that described in Fig. 1, is fixed, and the parabolic reflector 25 and back reflector 26 are rotatable about antenna 10 by means of gear 35, the radiating element thereby having an unobstructed view of the reflector 25. The transmission line 12 passes through an axial hole in bearing 29.
