[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A master compass comprises a northseeking member which is either a moving coil excited by pulsating direct current or a pivoted iron member influenced by a fixed coil similarly excited, co-operating with a pair of fixed secondary windings to form the transmitter of a repeater system. As shown, a moving coil 1 excited by pulsating current sets itself on the magnetic meridian and co-operates with fixed coils 2, 3 connected to distant field coils 21, 31 acting in known manner on a movable coil 11. The output of the latter drives a motor 13, the motion of which via suitable gearing and a Selsyn link is conveyed to the coil 1<SP>1</SP> until the latter has no output. Other repeater compasses may be controlled by the transmitter of the Selsyn link. The transmission line between the master compass and the repeater 1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> may include tuned circuits and damping resistors.
