Abstract

652,266. Resilient supports. NEIDHART, H. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34717. Convention date, June 4, 1946. [Class 108(iii)] An elastic joint comprises an outer tubular member having a polygonal inner cross section, an inner member, polygonal in cross section and arranged for limited rotational movement with respect to the outer member and a plurality of rubber rods, cylinders or like resilient members or pads disposed in the angles of the outer member in engagement with the flat faces of the inner member, to hold the inner member concentric with the outer member. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, outer and inner tubular elements 1 and 2 disposed concentrically at 45 degrees to each other are freely spaced 'apart by four resilient rods 4. The elements 1 and 2 are secured to relatively movable members, one of which may be connected to the inner element 2 by an arm 5 rigidly secured to a portion of the element 2 projecting beyond one end of the element 1. In other embodiments (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), the cross section of the inner and outer elements are triangular and hexagonal respectively. In another arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown), an outer square-section tube houses a cross shaped inner element and a resilient element disposed in each of the four spaces thus formed between the elements. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, also comprises another embodiment Fig. 6 (Cancelled). not shown, in which the outer square section element of Fig. 1 is formed in two symmetrical portions bolted together whereby the resilient elements may be pre-stressed during assembly of the joint. In a further arrangement Fig. 7 (Cancelled), not shown, a rectangular-section outer element houses two square-section inner elements parallel to each other and disposed at 45 degrees relative to the outer element, the inner and outer elements being spaced apart by six resilient elements disposed in the triangular spaces between the inner and outer elements. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (Cancelled), not shown, resilient elements are disposed between the conical surfaces of a joint head and two outer elements which are adjustable to prestress the resilient elements. A further embodiment, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), not shown, comprises a joint arm connecting a pair of elements and having joint heads which rest on flexible rings respectively within the elements. Pre-stressing of the rings is adjustable by means of a nut on the joint arm. In another embodiment Fig. 10 (Cancelled), not shown, resilient elements are disposed in oval-shaped spaces between a pair of relatively rotatable elements. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
