Abstract
651,005. Mining machines ; gummers. JOY MANUFACTURING CO. April 1, 1948, No. 9215. Convention date, May 23, 1947. [Class 68 (i)] In a kerf cutter, the cuttings are drawn within the casing of the machine into a chamber 21 and are expelled therefrom by a vertically disposed paddle member moving horizontally within the chamber, this paddle member having simultaneously imparted to it an oscillating as well as a rocking motion. The paddle consists of two overlapping plates 65, 66 keyed to one another so that they overlap and can slide horizontally with respect to each other. The outer ends of the plates are secured to two cranks 58, 59, which are symmetrically disposed about the axis of the casing of the machine, the cranks being 180 degrees out of phase and rotating in opposite directions. The cranks are driven from the same shaft as the kerf cutter through bevelled gearing, a hand controlled clutch unit and worm gearing. Formed on the back of the paddle is a projection 71 which, as it moves to and fro, displaces the cuttings to the side of the chamber from where they are placed by projections 69, 70 in the way of the paddle so as to be expelled.
