Abstract

649,728. Supply systems for welding arcs and resistance welding. ZACK, M. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34447. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] A D.C. or low-frequency A.C. welding arc operating from a supply of relatively low open circuit voltage is initiated and maintained by highfrequency currents generated in an oscillatory circuit which is shocked into oscillation when the electrode is withdrawn from the work to strike the arc or whenever the current in the welding circuit is abruptly interrupted by the are temporarily extinguishing. As shown, the electrode 4 and work 3 are connected to the low voltage supply terminals 1, 2 and also to a circuit comprising inductance 9, capacitance 10 and the secondary winding 11 of a current transformer 12 the primary winding 13 of which is included in the main welding circuit. When the current in the main welding circuit is interrupted collapse of flux in the transformer core shocks the circuit 9, 10 into oscillation. Filters may be provided to permit only the high-frequency oscillations to the arc from the oscillating circuit. The invention may be applied to resistance welding in which case the high-frequency oscillations are obtained upon interruption of the welding current.
