Abstract
649,523. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 19, 1947, No. 13423. Convention date, May 21, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] Voltage dividing electrodes 18-23 in a high voltage electric discharge tube are individually supported and each comprises a thin metallic diaphragm having a single central aperture 29 and formed with a circular rib 30 of V-shaped cross-section surrounding the aperture, the ribs of adjacent electrodes being nested and spaced apart a distance equal to or less than the height of the ribs so that no particle can move rectilinearly from the discharge path to the tube envelope without striking one of the dividing electrodes. The anode 15 is a sheet metal member of similar shape with an external terminal 25. The envelope has mounting grooves 28 to accommodate the slotted, bent-over marginal portions of the diaphragms. A cylindrical metal shield 33 limits the region of ionization at the cathode. Single wires or wire mesh may be provided over the apertures 29. The filling medium is mercury. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises dividing electrodes, each of which is substantially planar over its central region with cylindrical flanges secured to top and bottom surfaces. The electrodes are closer together than those shown in Fig. 1. There may be three element or grid control of the tube. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
