Abstract
648,727. Rolling. WOOD, F. J. April 21, 1948, No. 10995. Convention date, April 23, 1947. [Class 83 (iv)] In a rolling-mill having two uprights at each side of the housing to form windows, roll assembly carrier frames are provided for, and extend along, each roll, roll bearings being mounted at the ends of each frame to be adjustable relative to the frames and to rolls supported by the bearings before the frames, with the rolls and bearings assembled therein, are passed horizontally through the windows. In one form, Fig. 2, the upper frame 20 is retained by plates 26 and is supported by spring-pressed rods 63 which may be withdrawn by pneumatically-operated toggle-links 72, 74. The lower frame 39 is retained by a spring- pressed plunger 52 and is adjusted longitudinally by a collar 45 on a bolt 43. The pass is adjusted by worm-shafts 34, 35, hand-, or power-, driven, and is indicated by pointers 36. The chock at one end of each frame is bolted thereto and that at the other is adjusted axially of the roll by bolts abutting the outer end. The guide bearings are secured to the chocks by bolts 19, 50, those for the lower roll carrying springs. In another form. Fig. 5, the lower roll is adjusted vertically by wedges 116 moved simultaneously. In a further form, Fig. 9, the frames are retained by bolts passing through slots in end-plates 122, 123, the bolts carrying distance-pieces to position the rolls axially. The upper and lower guide-bearings 126, 127 are connected by bolts 128 and are maintained in contact with their rolls by springs 129. In a final form, the two-piece bearings are replaced by roller-bearings.
