Abstract

Alumina-silica, metal oxides, activated carbon, and other catalysts are separated into fractions having higher and lower specific surfaces by introducing into the pores thereof an impregnating liquid of a density different from the true density of the particles, dispersing the impregnated particles in a flotation liquid immiscible with the impregnating liquid and separating the dispersed particles into fractions denser and less dense than the flotation liquid, e.g. by settling or centrifugally. The flotation liquid may be ethylene dibromide alone or in solution in toluene or carbon tetrachloride; bromoform in carbon tetrachloride; acetylene tetrabromide in carbon tetrachloride or benzene; or aqueous salt solutions; and the impregnant may be water, methanol or ethanol or aqueous solutions thereof; glycols or aqueous solutions thereof, aqueous salt solutions, lower organic acids or salts thereof, diisobutyl ether, ethylene dibromide, or isoamyl alcohol.ALSO:A mixture of microporous particles is separated according to porosity by introducing into the pores thereof an impregnating liquid of a density different from the true density of the particles, dispersing the impregnated particles in a flotation liquid immiscible with the impregnating liquid and having a density intermediate between the densities of the impregnated particles, and separating the dispersed particles into fractions denser than and less dense than the flotation liquid. The impregnating liquid may be introduced into the pores of the particles by maintaining them in an atmosphere of the vaporized liquid or by blowing with a stream of air containing vaporized impregnant. The latter preferably wets the particles in preference to the flotation liquid. Final separation may be effected by settling or centrifugally. The process may be applied to the fractionation of powdered catalysts into portions having higher and lower specific surfaces, e.g. alumina-silica catalysts, metal oxide catalysts or activated carbon may be treated. Impregnating liquids include water; methanol and ethanol and aqueous solutions thereof; glycols and aqueous solutions thereof; aqueous salt solutions; lower organic acids or salts thereof; diisobutyl ether; ethylene dibromide; isoamyl alcohol. Flotation liquids include ethylene dibromide alone or in solution in toluene or carbon tetrachloride; solutions of bromoform in carbon tetrachloride; solutions of acetylene tetrabromide in carbon tetrachloride or benzene; aqueous salt solutions.
