Abstract
648,497. Jet propulsion plant. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 20, 1948, No. 22015. Convention date. Aug. 27, 1947. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XII] Means for reheating the exhaust gases of a gas turbine jet propulsion plant comprise flame holding means 23. Fig. 1b, for producing a degree of stagnancy in the gas stream, movable between a first or operative position, shown in full lines, where it produces a pressure drop in the gas stream and a second or inoperative position, shown in dotted lines where the pressure drop is materially reduced. Fuel is injected into the turbine exhaust gases from manifolds 51, 52, 53 mounted on the supporting cone 45. The flame holder 23 is divided into two halves pivoted on shafts 60. One of the shafts is oscillated by an arm connected to the pilot's control lever and the other shaft is operated by the first by means of gear segments. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flame holder is constructed as a single element mounted on a shaft 71 actuated through 'arm 72 by rod 73 connected to the pilot's control lever. The movements of the rod 73 may also be used to control the variable area propelling nozzle 80, 81, so that the nozzle is open to its fullest extent when the flame holder is moved to the operative position. The form of the shield elements of the flame holder is not critical but as shown are formed as hollow conical members 55 pointing upstream. A sparking plug may be positioned downstream of one of these conical members. Specification 620,270 is referred to.
