Abstract
648,366. Addressing-machines; feeding webs. GALE & HAYCRAFT, Ltd. May 27, 1948, Nos. 14361 and 21844. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] Continuous stationery is intermittently fed through a printing machine by a reciprocating carriage, whose sides slide along two parallel fixed rails formed with racks engaged by pinions fast on a cross-shaft rotatable in the carriage sides, and which carries a clamp to grip the paper in one direction only. As shown, a pair of rails 11 spaced by cross-bars and clamped by clamps 15, Figs. 2 and 5, to the bed 16 of an addressing machine, have racks 14 engaged by pinions 30 secured to the ends of a shaft 28 rotatable in a sliding carriage 25 whose side plates 26, Fig. 3, are grooved to receive the inner edges of the rails 11 ; the paper web passes between a clamping bed 31, connecting the plates 26, and a metal, rubber, &c. gripping roller 35 supported on levers 33 pivoted on the carriage at 32, and operated by a transverse handle 37, pressure on which first opens or closes the gripper 31, 35 (according to the direction) and then moves the carriage ; stop lugs 45 and a stop bar 46 on the latter engage rear and front stops 18, 24, Fig. 2, threaded for fine adjustment and locked in their split pillars by studs 22 ; the rear stop pillars are mounted on bases 23 secured to the rails 11 by studs 19 screwed into selected holes therein, for coarse adjustment. The stationery passes over a plate 42 and beneath a roller 44 and paper guides (not shown) mounted on a bar clamped to the rails 11 by clamps 41, and is drawn across the machine as the handle 37 is pulled towards the right of the Figures. The carriage and gripper may be operated by movement of the printing head 74, Fig. 5 ; an arm 73 thereon is linked to a sleeve 75 on an arm 71 of a quadrant 69 pivoted at 70 and geared through an idler 77 to a sprocket 68 on a spindle 65 carrying a cork-faced disc which frictionally drives a pulley 57 free on the spindle but adjustably spring-pressed against the disc ; an endless cable 53 is passed several times round the pulley 57 and over guide pulleys 54, 55 and a vertically adjustable guide pulley 56, and has a clamp 81 secured to it by a screw 82, this clamp being integral with a slotted plate 47 slidable on pins 49 on one side plate 26 of the carriage and engaging an extension 52 of the paper gripper handle 37. To ensure a full stroke of the carriage 25, the sleeve 75 is adjusted on the arm 71 to provide movement of the. cork-faced disc greater than that permitted to the pulley 57 by the stops 18, 24. According to the first Provisional Specification back feed is prevented by a pivoted finger or roller resting on the paper at the rear end of the track. According to the second Provisional Specification the gripper 31, 35 is spring-closed and the plate 47 has a crutch which abuts against one side of the handle 37 : there is also a lost-motion connection between the link 72 and the sleeve 75, and the cork-faced disc and pulley 57 may be mounted in a laterally. adjustable frame.
