Abstract

648,348. Sharpening slicing-machine cutters. METCALFE IDEAL PRODUCTS, Ltd., and McMILLAN, J. Feb. 9, 1948, No. 3685. [Class 60] The sharpening-unit of a meat-slicing machine having a rotatable circular knife is movable about a fixed axis from an operative to an inoperative position, and vice versa, and comprises a grinding-wheel and a trueing-wheel 13, the latter being brought into contact with the knife, when the unit is in operative position, by means mounted on the machine frame and actuable by a knob 29 disposed well remote from the unit and knife. The wheel 13 is secured to a spindle 12 rotatably but non-slidably mounted in a sleeve which has teeth 17 in mesh with a pinion 18 and is slidably keyed to the frame of the unit. The pinion 18 is keyed to a shaft 19 biassed by a spring 21 to move the wheel to the inoperative position and provided with an arm 20 in engagement with an axially-displaceable rod 24 which is spring-biassed in a direction away from the arm 20. The lower end of this rod is in contact with one limb of a bell-crank lever 27, the other limb of which is connected through a spring 31 with the control-knob 29. When the latter is pulled, the bell-crank lever is deflected displacing the rod 24 to cause rotation of the shaft 19 and bring the wheel 13 into contact with the knife. The spring 31 serves to limit the pressure which can be applied by the operator. Specifications 648,346 and 648,347 are referred to.
