[Classes 44 and 65(i)] A compartment in a motor vehicle body has an upwardly swinging closure 1, operated by a pneumatic motor having a piston 7 pivotally connected to the closure and a cylinder 5 pivotally connected to a fixed part of the compartment, a spring 31 being interposed between the piston and cylinder for providing a cushioned support for the closure. Suction is applied from the intake manifold of the motor through a pipe 10 selectively to either end of the cylinder by means of electro-magnetic valves 12, 12<1>. The switch controlling the valves comprises stationary contacts 17, 18 each connected to a valve, and a movable contact 19 held in a neutral position by means of springs 25, 26. The contact 19 is coupled, by a lost motion connection, comprising a slot 28 and pin 29, to a pivoted latch 20 which is normally held in engagement with a slotted keeper 3 on the closure by the said springs. The latch and switch are operable from within the vehicle by a flexible wire 22 whose initial movement serves to disengage the latch and whose further movement closes contacts 17, 19 thus operating the motor to raise the cover. Actuation of the wire 22 in the opposite direction closes the contacts 18, 19 to lower the cover, the lost motion connection now preventing movement of the latch. A keylock is provided at the end of the wire 22. In a modification the piston and cylinder are pivoted to the compartment and closure respectively.
