Abstract
Symmetrical dicarbocyanine dyes are prepared by reacting a compound prepared by the process of Specification 645,965, [Group IV (b)], and having one o the isomeric formul <FORM:0645968/IV (c)/1> and <FORM:0645968/IV (c)/2> wherein X is alkyl or aryl and R1 alkyl or aralkyl, with at least two molecular equivalents of a compound of the general formula <FORM:0645968/IV (c)/3> wherein R2 is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or aralkyl, Y1 is an acid radicle, and D1 is the residue of a benzthiazole or benzselenazole ring. The reaction may be effected in the presence of an acid anhydride and a strong base (e.g. acetic anhydride and triethylamine). Where R2 is a hydroxyalkyl group, it may be acylated in the course of the reaction. Bis - 2 - (3 - ethylbenzthiazole) - b - methylpentamethinecyanine iodide is prepared by heating together 2-methylbenzthiazole ethiodide, o -formylacetone trithioacetal, and acetic anhydride, adding triethylamine, and rapidly cooling. Bis - 2 - (3 - ethyl - 5 - methylbenzthiazole) - b - methylpentamethinecyanine iodide, bis - 2 - (3 - ethylbenzselenazole) - b - methylpentamethinecyanine iodide, bis - 2 - (3 - ethylbenzthiazole) - b - phenylpentamethinecyanine iodide, bis - 2 - (3 - b - acetoxyethylbenzthiazole) - b - phenylpentamethinecyanine iodide, and bis-2-(3-ethylbenzselenazole) - b - phenylpentamethinecyanine iodide are similarly prepared.
