Abstract
Decolourized water which develops an unusually low degree of colour on boiling is obtainable from mains water coloured by organic matter by treating it with a quantity of hydrogen peroxide sufficient to provide not less than 2 and not more than 10 parts available oxygen per million parts of water by weight. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of chlorine, and may be applied prior to or concurrently with treatment with normal absorbents and/or the formation of a precipitate of hydrated silica and/or a precipitate of metallic hydroxide (e.g. ferric iron or aluminium). In an example, five parts by weight of oxygen added as hydrogen peroxide and one part by weight of chlorine to a million parts by weight of moorland mains water followed by addition of sodium carbonate, sodium aluminate and aluminium sulphate, gives a water having a colour on filtration of from 2 to less than one Hazen unit; the colour is not appreciably increased on boiling.
