Abstract
A process for the production of p-toluic acid or a mixture of p-toluic acid and terephthalic acid comprises heating p-tolualdehyde or mixtures thereof with p-toluic acid, in a saturated liquid aliphatic acid diluent, in the presence of oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen. The preferred temperature range is approximately from 10 DEG to 150 DEG C. As oxidation catalysts may be employed organic and inorganic salts of copper, cobalt, nickel, silver, lead manganese, vanadium, calcium and tin. Organic compounds tending to form peroxides under the reaction conditions and acting as oxidation initiators include aliphatic per acids, aldehydes, ketones and ethers, cycloaliphatic ketones, aromatic per acids, arolyl peroxides, olefines and cycloolefines representative of which are per acetic acid, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone, diisopropyl, diethyl and diamyl ethers, cyclohexanone, perbenzoic acid, benzoyl peroxide, octylene and cyclohexene. The oxidation may be conducted at any pressure and in continuous operation the liquid components of the reaction mixture may be passed through a reactor concurrently with or countercurrently to the free oxygen-containing gas. In examples: p-tolualdehyde is oxidized in the presence of acetic acid, propionaldehyde and manganous, copper and cobalt acetates (2), cobalt acetate (4), lead acetate and calcium carbonate (5), silver acetate (6), nickel carbonate and cobalt acetate (7), SnO2 and cobalt acetate 98), and copper and cobalt acetates (11). p-Tolualdehyde and p-toluic acid mixtures are heated in the presence of glacial acetic acid and propionaldehyde with, in examples (1) air, (3) benzoyl peroxide and oxygen, (10) copper and cobalt acetates and air. Example (9) is similar to example (10), acetic acid being replaced by isobutyric acid. The terephthalic acid formed may be filtered off and p-toluic acid obtained by evaporation of the aliphatic acid diluent.
