Abstract
644,652. Packaging. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. March 22, 1948, No. 8404. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1947. [Class 94(i)] A method of packaging articles such as fruits and vegetables comprises placing an article over an opening in a sheet of cardboard or the like covered on one or other surface by a film of thermoplastic material such as rubber hydrochloride, polyethylene or vinylidene chloride, and then while the film is stretchable, doubling the sheet over along a line which passes through the opening to stretch the film over the article and enclose same in a pocket thus formed in the film. The package shown in Fig. 5 is made from a sheet of cardboard 2, Fig. 3, formed with a handle 5 and two rows of elongated openings 1 and covered on its front face by rubber hydrochloride film 6. The film is heated to about 190‹ C., the objects 10 to be packaged placed on the film over the openings, and the cardboard folded over along the scored lines 3 and 4 to stretch the film around the objects and heat-seal the opposed surfaces of the adjoining parts of the film. The overlapping portions of the cardboard sheet may, alternatively, be stapled or otherwise secured together, and in this case the film may be on the outer surface instead of the inner surface of the cardboard.
