Abstract
An abrasive article comprises abrasive grains greatly in excess by weight of the organo-silicon polymer used as the bonding material. The abrasive grains may be mixed with a thick syrupy organo-silicon resin, or with a thick paste or cream of the resin, or may be masticated on a roller mill with coagulated resin. The final hardening is by heat and pressure, either of shaped blanks or in moulds. Suitable organo-silicon compounds are described in Specifications 561,136, 563,995, and in U.S.A. Specification 2,438,520. Abrasive grains mentioned are silicon carbide, diamonds, boron carbide, fused aluminium oxide, flint, corundum, emery and rouge. Other inorganic fillers which may also be included are boric oxide, quartz fines, titanium oxide, clay or glass wool fibres. Other bonding materials which may also be included in relatively minor amounts are phenolic, urea-aldehyde, alkyd or vinyl resins, natural or synthetic rubber.
