644,079. Turning gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Nov. 10, 1947, No. 29924. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1946. [Class 7 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] In an electric starter wherein a driving pinion (not shown) on the starter armature 3 is engaged with the engine to be started by the axial displacement of the armature, an auxiliary field winding 2<SP>1</SP> is provided for displacing the armature 3, which winding is shunted across the armature winding, the principal field winding 7 and a resistance 8, these three being connected in series. When a starting switch 1 is operated the armature 3 is slowly rotated as well as axially displaced, the rotation resulting from the energization of the principal field 7, which at this stage is connected in series with the resistance 8. When the pinion engagement has been effected the armature closes a contact 4 and energizes an electro-magnetic switch 5 thereby shortcircuiting the resistance 8, whereupon the starter functions at full power as a compound machine.
