Abstract
643,924. Typewriters &c. LAMSON PARAGON SUPPLY CO., Ltd., and GARWOOD, V. W. May 3, 1948, No. 12093. [Class 100 (iv)] An attachment for writing, tabulating or recording machines for removing the perforated feeding margins from webs as they issue from the machine comprises a detachable frame carrying transverse spindles 14, 39 upon which an endless moving tractor 12 having sprocket pins for engaging marginal holes in webs, is adjustably mounted, and a pair of transverse spindles 24, 25 carrying cutting wheels 22, 23 arranged one above the other with their cutting edges overlapping, the wheels being driven in opposite directions and at peripheral speeds greater than the linear speed of the web in order to keep the web taut as it is cut or trimmed. The side plates of the attachment are slotted at 48, 51 for detachable mounting on the machine and carry adjusting screws 55 which bear on a machine frame transverse rod which enters the slot 51 so that the attachment may pivot about a further rod in the slot 48. This pivoting ensures correct meshing of pinions on the spindles 14, 24, 25 with gears in a gear-box fixed on the outer side of one of the side plates. The tractor 12 is transversely adjustable along keyways on the spindles 14, 39 and may be fixed by a screw 19 against a further spindle 15. Pivotally attached to the tractor is an arm 37, the free end of which engages in one of a number of grooves 41, 44 on an extension 42 of the lower cutting wheel 23. Each cutting wheel is carried by a sleeve keyed to its respective spindle so that by means of a coupling plate 26 and the arm 37, the cutting wheels and the tractor are aligned. Relative adjustment between the marginal feeding holes in the web and the line of cutting is made by setting the arm 37 in one of the grooves 41, 44. The wheel 22 is so mounted that it can be withdrawn from contact with wheel 23 and held out of action so that the web can pass without being trimmed. For this purpose the wheel 22 is mounted on a sleeve 28a which rotates within a second sleeve 29 so that when a control lever 33 is rotated a pin 32 riding up an inclined surface 31 draws the wheel 22 from wheel 23 against a returning spring 29a. The wheel 22 may be held away by anchoring the lever 33 behind a pin 34 on the plate 26.
