Abstract
643,673. Electromagnetic track brakes. FREINS JOURDAIN MONNERET. May 6, 1947, No. 12170. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1946. [Class 103 (i)] The weight of an electromagnetic track brake, for emergency use in train and railway vehicles, is reduced to a minimum by using magnetic parts of high permeability, i.e. at least 200 for an induction of 1800 gauss, conductors capable of withstanding a high current density, such as 1000 amps per square centimetre, and insulated by materials having a very high heat resistance, such as the plastic materials known as " silicones." By combining these characteristics in multi-polar magnets, such as those shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the mean length of the magnetic circuit is reduced to less than three times the width of the rail bearing surface. Numbers of such magnets may be mounted on a single bar suspended below the vehicle as shown in Fig. 10.
