Abstract
643,644. Knitting-machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY, & CO., Ltd., and MONK, S. A. July 11, 1945, No. 17649. [Class 74 (ii)] In a knitting-machine, a member is driven to and fro with an amplitude dependent on the length of path of a flexible driving member between adjustable guides, over which the flexible member is traversed by a second driving member; and shogging means is provided for imparting to the flexible member, preparatory to each of successive traverses of the driven member, a linear displacement, in relation to the second driving member and guides, in the direction of the traverse. A carrier driving bar 8 is reciprocated by a reciprocating endless double chain 1, through a slider 12 on the chain and a coacting guide slot 11 formed by fingers 10 depending from a block 9 carried by the driving bar; the chain is reciprocated from the tie-bar 20, through a chain 19, sprocket 17, pinion 15, gear 16 and sprocket 7. To give " lead " to the bar 8, at the beginning of each traverse, the chain 1 is given a linear displacement, between successive traverses, by shifting sprockets 7, 7<SP>1</SP> bodily in one direction or the other. This is done by rocking the sprocket-carrying levers 13, 13<SP>1</SP> by means of a lead cam 21 rotating at half cam-shaft speed. In order that the carrier travel may be varied, pairs 2, 3 and 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> of the chain guiding sprockets are mounted on blocks 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, slidable on a guide 5 and adjustable towards and away from each other by the rack heads of the machine, so as to vary the length of the horizontal portion 1c of the chain 1. The carrier bar 8 is held stationary at each end of its draw (whilst the slider 12 is travelling up or down one of the vertical portions 1a, 1b of the chain path) by catches 29, 29<SP>1</SP>, which are engaged by one or other of latches 30, 30<SP>1</SP> on plungers 32, 321, raised and lowered by a cam 34 reciprocated by the tie-bar 20. The trucks 33, 331, which coact with the cam 34, are shogged into and out of its path, at the appropriate times, by a bar 35 carried on a shaft 36 which is rocked, through connections 37, from one of the truck levers co-operating with cam 21. The tie-bar 20 may be reciprocated by conventional draw mechanism, or by mechanism comprising an endless chain or the like moving continuously in two laps over end sprockets or the like, and a connection between a point on the chain and a member which is thereby driven to and fro as the point travels first along one lap and then along the other; the connection may consist of a slider (e.g. a slide block or roller) on the chain and a co-operating guide on the member.
