Abstract
Metal and other surfaces are coated with a composition which comprises metal dust selected from zinc, lead, aluminium, magnesium, cadmium or alloys thereof dispersed in an alkali silicate solution in which the molar ratio of the alkali oxide to silica is between 1 : 2.3 to 1 : 3.0, while the metal dust has an average particle size of not more than 6 microns, preferably 3 microns, at least 90 per cent by weight passing through a 400-mesh Tyler sieve. The composition after application to a metal surface is preferably heated. The composition may also include fatty acids, cement, ammonia, arsenic oxide, red lead, lead chromate or white lead. Part of the sodium silicate in the composition may be replaced by potassium silicate. The metal surface prior to coating may be treated with acid, washed and sand-blasted and, if desired, further washed with an alkali such as lime water. Specification 553,348 is referred to.
