Abstract
Printing compositions comprise a pigment or dyestuff, a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer resin and a solvent or mixture of solvents for the copolymer. Preferably a plasticizer is present which is compatible with the copolymer. When a pigment is used it may be dispersed in the solvent and if a dyestuff is used it is preferably soluble in the mixture of solvents. A blend of high- and low-boiling solvents is preferably used. Specified solvents are acetone, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, propylene oxide and trichlorethylene. Other solvents may also be added such as benzene and toluene. Specified plasticizers are n-butyl acetyl - ricinoleate, di - n - octyl phthalate, di - n - butyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate. Examples show a composition of a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, tricresyl phosphate, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene and either Fast Red G or Chrome Green.ALSO:Plastic materials of polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer are printed by applying thereto a pigment or dyestuff, a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer resin and a solvent or mixture of solvents for the vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, at least one of which dissolves polyvinyl chloride if the material is so constituted. Preferably a plasticizer is present which is compatible with the vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and with polyvinyl chloride if the material is so constituted. At least one solvent used may be a ketone and at least one solvent may be incapable of dissolving the polyvinyl material. When a pigment is used it may be dispersed in the solvent, and if a dyestuff is used it is preferably soluble in the mixture of solvents. The invention is applicable to the printing of sheets or extruded sections such as electrical insulating coatings of wires and cables. The printing may be effected in a static manner, or the printing composition may be applied to the continuously moving material. Multiple printing with different colours may also be carried out. Various methods of printing are described. A blend of high- and low-boiling solvents is preferably used. Specified solvents for the resin and the material are acetone, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone and methyl isobutyl ketone. Specified solvents for the resin which have only a slight action on the material are ethyl acetate, isopropyl acetate, propylene oxide and trichlorethylene, when the material is polyvinyl chloride. Other solvents which do not dissolve the material may also be added, e.g. benzene and toluene. Specified plasticizers are n-butyl acetyl-ricinoleate, di-n-octyl phthalate, di-n butyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate. Examples show the use of vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, tricresyl phosphate, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene and either Fat Red G or Chrome Green.
