Abstract

642,544. Sealing cans by adhesive tape. DU MONT, Ltd., C. S., and HUDSON, G. R. June 28, 1947, No. 17092. [Class 73] A machine for applying sealing tape around the tops of containers &c. comprises a stationary adjustable table on which the container is mounted and a rotatable member carrying the tape around the container and serving by means of a cam and stop to operate a cutter when the container is taped. The table 4 is adjustably mounted on the base 1 of the machine and a member 11 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 10 and turned by a handle 12, Fig. 2. A flat lever 13 is pivotally mounted at 48 on the member 11 and biased upwardly by means of a leaf spring 34. A tape-holder 14 is also mounted on the pivot 48, the tape passing over guide pins 18, 19 fixed on the lever 13 and in front of a pressure applying roller 17 pivoted at 16 on the lever 13. Fixed to the pivot 16 is an arm 23 which carries a knife 24 and an applying pad 26. A further arm 28 is pivoted at 27 on the arm 23 and is attached to the end of a rod 29 slidably mounted in a bracket 30 and loaded by a spring 32. The shaft 10 of the member 11 is supported in a side plate 8 fixed to the base 1 and pivoted on this plate 8 are a cam 40 and a spring pressed stop lever 45. A roller mounted on a shaft 37 on the lever 13 engages the cam 40 to operate the cutter. Fig. 2 shows the machine set ready to operate. A container such as a can is placed on the table 4 against a stop plate 51. The tape is then trapped between the can and the roller 17 held in engagement with the can by the spring 34. The handle is rotated, moving the member 11 in an anticlockwise direction in Fig. 2 and the pressure roller 17 round the can to apply the tape. Just before the member 11 has completed its cycle the roller on the shaft 37 engages the back of the cam 40 which moves the stop lever 45 into the path of a stop 44 on the member 11, and locks the cam 40 in position. Continued rotation of the member 11 therefore forces the roller down on the cam and so forces the lever 13 to pivot anticlockwise about 48, thus withdrawing the roller 17 into the position shown in Fig. 3. This brings the knife 24, guided by the rod 29, up to the tape and severs it, further rotation bringing the pad 26 up, to wipe the end of the tape into place. In this position the stop 44 engages the stop lever 45 and further rotation is prevented. To reset the machine, the handle is turned back a little, which movement causes the roller on the shaft 37 to push the tail of the cam 40 clockwise, when the roller rises under the action of the spring 34 on the lever 13. Similarly, the roller 17 is returned to its operative position by the pivoting of the lever 13. Movement of the cam 40 also allows the stop lever 45 to pivot under the action of its spring out of the way of the stop 44. A finger 22, and the irreversible guide pin 18, ensure that the tape is presented to the next can when put in position.
