[Class 83 (iii)] A self-tightening chuck comprises a positivelydriven outer casing A, a body section B which is turnable relatively tothe outer casing but which is restrained from axial movement relative thereto, and jaw members 25 which are slidably mounted within the body section so as to be capable only of radial movement, the jaw members being moved to grip the tool or work by rotating the outer casing in the direction of drive. The outer casing is provided with cam surfaces 17 which co-operate with complementary cam surfaces 25b on the jaw members. The body section is held in the outer casing by means of a locking pin 21. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the upper end of the stem of the body section is formed with teeth which mesh with the teeth of an idle pinion, carried by the outer casing, which also mesh with the internal teeth of a cap turnably associated with the outer casing. The jaw members are loosened by gripping the cap and turning the outer casing. In another modification, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the stem of - the body section is formed with ratchet teeth engaged by teeth provided on one of the limbs of a U-shaped locking pin. In a further modification, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), the jaw members are formed with oppositelydisposed projections which engage with oppositely-arranged cam grooves formed in the outer casing. The body section is formed with a stepped tapered hole for centring the tool or work. In a still further modification, Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown), the jaw members are screw-threaded and mounted within tapped walls of the slots in the body section, the jaw members also having axially-arranged teeth carried by the outer casing. The body section is secured to the outer casing by means of a locking pin having teeth co-operating with holes in the stem of the body section.
