Abstract

642,021. Bag handles. UNION BAG & PAPER CORPORATION. May 5,1948, No. 12316. Convention date, May 5, 1947. Drawings to Specification. [Class 133] Handles for shopping bags are formed from continuous strips of material, e.g. paper, supplied in rolls, the handles being made and affixed simultaneously in pairs. From the supply rolls the strips are drawn through a scoring device for scoring longitudinally and are thus divided into a central portion and lateral portions, which are preferably of slightly less width than the central portion. They then pass into contact with pasting means to apply paste to the lateral portions, through folders to fold the lateral portions inwardly on to the centre, one after the other. The strips pass between squeeze rollers for compression. The three-ply tapes are then passed through a drying compartment which has means for gradually converging them toward superposed upper and lower draw roll mechanisms, one for each tape. A pair of handle folding cylinders are arranged in the path of the bags, which are fed through the machine, and which cylinders are rotatable on horizontal axes and between which the bags pass. The said mechanisms pull the tapes to feed them transversely across the periphery of the respective handle folding cylinders on the sides diametrically opposite to the pathway of the bags. Each folding cylinder has a pair of spaced grippers which grasp the relevant tape when fed into position after guidance by suitable means, means being provided to sever the tape at the proper length to form handles. The grippers then firmly clamp the central portion of the strip which is the grip portion, against the periphery of the cylinder and carry the strip past folding cams which fold the ends backwardly at right angles to the central portion. Pressure rollers then engage the tape at the folds and permanently crease it. Further rotation of the cylinders carries the folded ends between guiding means to paster rolls whereby paste is applied to the trailing portions of the rearwardly folded ends. The pasted portions are applied to a bag as it passes between the cylinders, presser means on the cylinders firmly pressing the pasted portions into contact with the bag. As the bag passes on from the presser means, the grippers are retracted, and strippers detach the handles from the cylinders and guide the bags to a discharge mechanism. Suitable mechanism is described in considerable detail with respect to drawings.
