Abstract
1,1,3-trialkoxy butane may be formed by reaction between crotonaldehyde and an excess of a saturated aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and isopropyl, in the presence of a mineral acid, distilling off excess alcohol and unreacted crotonaldehyde and washing with water. A small amount of alkoxy butyl aldehyde is also formed if water is present in the reaction mixture.ALSO:1.1.3. Trialkoxy butane is used as the frothing agent in a froth flotation process. The compound may be formed by the reaction between crotonaldehyde and a saturated aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, n-butyl or iso propyl, and a small quantity of alkoxy butyl aldehyde, which is also formed if water is present in the reaction mixture, may be present in the agent. Hydroquinone may be added to prevent auto-oxidation and improve the keeping properties of the reagent.
