Abstract
641,564. Uniting by fusion. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Nov. 7, 1947, No. 29672. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1946. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Groups XI] In atomic - hydrogen welding - apparatus the feeds of pairs of non- consumable electrodes 183 are electrically controlled to keep the arc length constant. Each electrode holder slides in an element having a cooling jacket near the arcing end of the electrode and the hydrogen is fed to the arc in heat transfer relation with the jacket. The electrode 183 is held by a collet 182 at the end of a pair of relatively screw-movable holder tubes 172, 174. The jacket comprises two concentric tubes 214, 216 carrying a nozzle 226 with gas passages 232 fed through a port 222 connected by a tube 218 within the jacket to a gas inlet 206. A partition 236 completes the division of the jacket into two parts connected by ports 248 to the cooling-liquid supply. Two elements 46, 48 are mounted on a V-shaped frame 10 pivoted to a fixed frame 52 and movable by a hand worm 344 to adjust the position of the arc relative to the work 50 traversed thereunder. Specification 641,565, [Group XXXV], is referred to for the electrical operation and control of the motors feeding the elements 46, 48.
