Abstract
641,347. Rail vehicles. BUDD CO. April 1, 1946, No. 10002. Convention date, April 17, 1945. [Classes 103(iv) and 103 (vi)] In order to prevent the centre sill of a vehicle body from bending upwardly when subjected to heavy buffing shocks the sill is made stronger in its lower portion so that the neutral axis lies nearer to the underside of the sill, and the end underframes are constructed so that the buffing shocks are directed in a downwardly inclined direction into the bottom of the bolster and centre sill. The underframe of the body comprises, Fig. 1 a centre sill 1, between bolsters 5, with continuations 4 attached to end castings 11 forming housings for the buffing and draft gear, and cross-bearers 9 and side sills 57. The centre sill 1, Figs. 6, 12, and its continuation 4, are riveted together at 47 inboard of the bolster 5, and the sill 1 telescopes into the sill 4, Fig. 12, the sill 1 comprising sides 61 and a double bottom 62. whilst the sill 4 comprises channel-shaped sides 12. The top closure of the sill 1 comprises floor pans with little longitudinal' resistance so that the neutral axis of the sill 1 lies about one-third of the height from the bottom of the beam. The sides 12 of the siil 4 are spaced apart by an inclined web 39, Fig. 6, which terminates at its lower end under the bolster 5 and its upper end'meets the top surface of the sill at the point where the side members of the sill diverge to form struts for the bufter casting 11 and the web abuts the apex of a triangulated structure 23, 26, 27, the vertical face 23 of which is buttressed against the buffer casting by angles 21 fixed to a horizontal web 24 which forms the top surface of the buffer recess, partitions 42, 45 across the sides 4 forming a compartment for the buffing and draw gear, the bottom of the compartment. being closed by a plate 58. The direction of the buffing shocks are shown by the lines 59, 60, Fig. 6, and these are transmitted primarily by the web 39 to the underside of the bolster 5 and thence into the lower part of the centre sill 1. The bolster 5, Fig. 12, comprises a central portion formed by the junction of the centre sills, 1, 4 to which is attached a bogie pivot casting 77 and the sides of the bolster are upswept and comprise upper and lower plates 50, 49 and side plates 48 forming a box section, each side being riveted to the centre sills. The ends of the bolster are offset to receive the side sills 57 as described in Specification 606,946, and longitudinal angles 132 and inverted channels 131 receive the floorboards. The region between the two bolsters 5 is filled with transverse floor pans of channel shape and beyond the bolsters 5 by Z-shaped floor pans and short channel-shaped floor pans adjoin the buffing gear structure. The cross-bearers 9 consist of two side plates 79, Fig. 17, closed by upper and lower plates 84, 81 connected to each side of the centre sill and connected together by bridging pieces 87, 90, spacers 88 being inserted between the side plates 63 of the centre sill which align with the two side plates 79. The outer ends of the cross-bearers 9 are offset to fit into the side sills 57 in a similar manner to the bolster ends. Lateral brackets welded to the centre sill. 4 where the sides 12 diverge form an anchorage for the vestibule partition wall and its supports. Specifications 606,945 and 641,348 also are referred to.
