641,045. Making tools. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 3, 1948, No. 15013. Convention date, June 4, 1947. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Brazing.-A cemented tungsten carbide body 8 is brazed to a ferrous support 1, e.g. in tipping a steel lathe &c. tool, by placing a trimetal piece 6 comprising a silver-base-solder coated copper lamination 7 between the body 8 and support 1 and heating to a temperature above the melting point of silver solder but below that of copper to bond the whole together. The piece 6 is blanked out of a strip of 0.01 inch copper with a 0.005 inch silver solder coating or bonded strip on each side, and is of the same size as the lower face of the body 8. The heating temperature is between 1200‹ and 1500‹ F. attained by oxyacetylene flame, electric induction or hydrogen furnace and the tip &c. is suitably fluxed. The body 8 is sintered tungsten carbide with a nickel or cobalt binder and may contain tantalum carbide and, or titanium carbide. The silver solder comprises 50 per cent silver, 15.5 per cent copper, 16.5 per cent zinc and 18 per cent cadmium.
