Abstract
641,023. _Making bearing-rollers. ENGVALL, K. A. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34374. Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Bearing-rolls 10 are turned and ground in succession on the end of a hardenable steel rod 22 leaving a neck portion 28 by which the roll remains integral with the rod during hardening. The hardening may be performed before or after grinding and may be by any method in which the neck portion 28 is not appreciably hardened so that the rolls may be parted off subsequently. Inductive heating is preferable and in this method a coil of air- or water-cooled copper tube 38 is used, the hardening being controlled to a depth approximately indicated by the line 40. The outermost end 44 of the coil may be reduced to heat the outer spherical face 14 or the face may be hardened after the roll has been parted off.
