Abstract
640,765. Invalids' chairs. MIERRE, C. DE. Aug. 13, 1948, No. 21356. [Class 52 (ii)] An invalids' chair is provided with a seat, an adjustable leg rest and adjustable back rest, and a device whereby the occupant, by manipulation of a single operating member, can selectively adjust the angle of the chair, the angle of the leg rest only or adjust the angle of the back rest only. The device may additionally be used selectively to vary the height of the foot rest provided on the leg rest and to create a gap in the seat to expose a sanitary utensil. A ramp may be provided whereby the chair with its occupant may be transferred from its undercarriage to a frame situated in a vehicle or the like. The seat frame 1 is provided with front and rear tubes 2, 3 the front tube 2 having secured thereto a leg rest comprising telescopic tubes interconnected by a foot rest 5 while the rear tube 3 has mounted thereon the arms 16 of a back rest. The front tube 2 has passing through it a threaded spindle the rotation of which traverses a nut 7 causing cables 8, 9 to raise the foot rest 5 or allow it to descend. The rear tube 3 is provided with a worm wheel 19, rotated through worm 113 sprocket 111 and chain 110 from the control device, whereby the back rest is angularly adjustable. The front tube 2 is also rotatable to adjust the angle of the leg rest. The chair seat is tiltable by rotation of the threaded spindles 23 on the ends of which are the front rollers 20 bearing on the front cross rail 22 of the undercarriage. A sanitary utensil 48 is positioned on the undercarriage below the seat and the seating surface of the latter is arranged so as to provide a registering gap. One method of creating this gap is shown in Fig. 6, wherein two strips 68 of flexible material with cushioning material 70 are at their remote sides connected to the seat frame, pass over fixed transverse springs 53 and movable springs 56 and finally connected to the seat frame by tension springs 69. The springs 56 are carried by links 57 secured to nuts 60 on a screw spindle 61 the rotation of which draws the springs 56 along slots 59 so permitting the springs 69 to draw apart the contiguous edges of the strips 68 and cushions 70 to provide the required gap. The single control device comprises a series of hollow spindles 81 ... 85, Fig. 4, having a rotatable cover 87 provided with a handle 88. The cover 87 is lockable with any one of the hollow spindles by means of a key 89 and the lower ends of the hollow spindles are adapted to operate the various adjustments above described through connecting means such as sprockets, worm gearing, screw gearing &c. so that the particular adjustment desired is obtained by locking the appropriate hollow spindle to the cover 87 and rotating it by means of the handle 88. The control device may be mounted on either arm rest and the handle 88 may, if desired, be replaced by a switch for a reversible motor.
