Abstract
Styrene, its lower homologues, e.g. ethyl styrene, a -methyl-p-methyl styrene and 2,4-dimethyl styrene, and nuclear chlorine substituted derivatives, e.g. p-chlorstyrene or mixtures thereof are polymerized by heating in the homogenous liquid phase using as sole catalyst a tertiary monohydroperoxide of the formula <FORM:0640413/IV (a)/1> where Ar is an aryl radical and R a methyl, ethyl or aryl radical. Tertiary mono-hydroperoxides of mono-, di- and tri-isopropyl benzene, a -isopropyl naphthalene, sec-butyl benzene, diphenyl methyl methane, o-, m- and p-tolyl dimethyl methanes, di-tolyl and dixylyl methyl methanes and a - and b -naphthyl and methyl naphthyl dimethyl methanes are specified. An inert diluent, e.g. benzene or cumene may be present during polymerization. Cast products may be heated to 200 DEG C. to complete removal of monomer. Specification 604,544 and U.S.A.
