Abstract

639,915. Sewing-machines. BRANDWEIN & CO., A. Feb. 27, 1948, No. 6047. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1942. [Class 112] A sewing-machine comprises a carriage movable on a pair of ways on a supporting frame, means for intermittently feeding the work past the stitching mechanism, the carriage being adapted to produce relative movement between the work and the stitching mechanism transverse to the direction of feed, and reciprocating means connected with the carriage through lost-motion means rendering the reciprocating means ineffective so that the movement of the carriage is interrupted during feed. Feed.-In the embodiment shown, for making lines of stitching across strips of material forming mattress boxing, a sewing-machine 9 adapted to make stitches with any direction of feed is mounted on a carriage 8 which is moved back and forth along rails 6 to produce the lines of stitching, the work being fed from right to left after each movement of the carriage to position the successive lines ; the sewing-machine operates continuously so that no thread-cutting device or intermittent stop mechanism is required, and the successive transverse lines of stitching are made alternately in opposite directions and are connected by longitudinal lines placed alternately at one end and the other of the transverse lines. A single motor 11 drives the machine 9, the carriage 8, and a pair of geared rollers 61 which feed the work. The carriage is actuated by a pitman of adjustable length from a pin adjustable radially of a rotating disc 45, so that its initial position and length of movement can be varied ; the link has a slot engaging the pin, so that there is some lost motion at each half-revolution of the disc 45, during which the carriage 8 is stationary, and the feed rollers 61 are actuated during this dwell by a cam 77 engaging a lever 79 adjustably connected to a ratchet arm 85 driving the lower roller. Presser wheels : work-guides.-A slightly-inclined presser-wheel with a rounded edge is carried close to the needle on a spring-loaded presser-bar. The work passes between a pair of rollers carried by standards 55, the top roller being spring-loaded, on its way to the sewing-machine, and then passes under a set of holding-down rollers 95 carried on arms 97 pivoted on brackets 90 on the standards 55 ; the set comprises a central roller extending over most of the width of the work (which may enclose padding) and bearing on the work by its own weight, and two side rollers on spring-loaded arms.
