Abstract
Dielectric material is prepared by heating uncompacted, finely divided titanium dioxide, the crystal structure of which does not correspond with that of rutile, at a temperature above 1200 DEG C., preferably up to 1400 DEG C. in the presence of 0.1-0.3 per cent aluminium oxide until the crystals possess an average size of 1-2 microns. Pigment grade anatase titanium dioxide is suitably used as the starting material. Salts, e.g. the sulphate, nitrate and acetate, decomposing at the reaction temperature may be used as the source of the alumina; suitably, aluminium sulphate may be added to an aqueous slurry of titanium oxide, which is then brought to a pH of 6-7 with ammonia dewatered and dried prior to heating at 1250 DEG C. for 6-12 hours.
