Abstract
638,882. Vehicle steering gear. GEMMER MANUFACTURING CO. July 28, 1947, No. 20326. Convention date, May 28, 1941. [Class 80 (iii)] In a vehicle steering gear, the steering stem B carries a loose worm C which is geared to the steerable road wheels. A fixed ring F has a cylindrical bore into which project projections I, J, on the worm C and stem B respectively. Between the projections I, J, two rollers K<1>, K<2> are located with their line of centres slightly to one side of a diameter of the ring F. These rollers contact the projection I and the bore of the ring F but have slight clearance with the projection J. Under normal conditions a reversible drive through the rollers K<1>, K<2>, takes place between the members B, C. If, however, abnormal shocks occur on the steerable wheels these are not communicated to the stem B as the rollers K<1>, K<2> tend to bind and lock against the bore of the fixed ring F.
