Abstract
638,660. Photographic roll-film cameras. KODAK, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1947, No. 34510. Convention date, Jan. 8. [Class 98 (i)] A camera includes a receptacle into which is axially loadable for exposure a roll film cartridge comprising a flanged spool carrying the film and enclosed in an open - ended cylindrical container, means which limit the axial movement of said container into the receptacle but permits the spool to continue its axial movement to a film-advancing position independently of the container which may then be removed, the receptacle including a snap-latch which cooperates with a flange of the spool to retain it in loaded position. As shown, the film car- . tridge comprises a spool 5 with dished end flanges 2, 3, which retain on the spool in substantially light-tight manner a film having an opaque back, and an open-ended cylindrical container 7 having an annular internal flange at the upper end against which the flange 2 is pressed, and dimple catches which snap beneath the rim of the lower flange 3 so that the spool is held in light manner in the container. The cartridge is loaded endwise into a supply spool chamber which is provided with an external hinged door and in which is disposed a cylindrical holder 33 having a cutaway portion 38 and carried by a support 34 secured to the bottom wall 135 of the camera. The holder 33 is formed at diametrically opposite positions with spring arms 40, 45, each having an inwardly bent finger as 42 and an inwardly projecting lug as 43, the arm 40 being disposed at one edge 39 of the portion 38 while another similar spring arm 49 having an inwardly projecting finger 48 and a manually operable extension 51 is disposed at the other edge of the portion 38. On loading the cartridge into the holder, the cartridge moves down to the position shown when the fingers of the arms 40, 45 engage the bottom 8 of the container 7. By pressing on the upper spool flange and pulling on the container, the snap latch 8, 10 is released and the spool moves downwardly out of the container, pressing the arms 40, 45 outwardly and is latched in the holder by the finger 48 of the arm 49 engaging above the rim of the lower flange 3. The container 7 is then freely withdrawn and the spool chamber door closed. On rotating the film winding knob (Fig. 2, not shown) on a shaft 83 which extends into and engages the spool core, the tapered tongue of the coiled film is engaged between a guide plate and a waisted roller as described and claimed in Specification 558,515 so that the film is curved across its width, allowing it to pass off the spool between the dished flanges, and is wound across the exposure aperture into an empty chamber from which it is completely re-wound when all the exposures have been made. To remove the exposed spooled film the container 7 is placed over the spool disengaging the latch 48 and the latch 8, 10 pressed home so that the cartridge may then be withdrawn as a light-tight unit.
