Abstract

638,588. Railway track brakes. ALLEN & SONS (TIPTON), Ltd., W. G., and TOLHURST, W. T. Oct. 11, 1947, No. 27331. [Class 103 (i)] In a track brake for mine cars and the like, the actual displacement of the gripper bars 4 by the wheels of a car passing them is made to force liquid into a spring loaded master cylinder 14 and in so doing to generate a reaction pressure which brakes the wheels. In the arrangement shown, a reservoir 21, maintained at a small positive pressure, supplies the hydraulic system through a non-return valve 24 and a pipe 25. Pressure may be released, if necessary, by a hand-operated byepass valve 36. Alternative arrangements are described in which the gripper bars are pressed on to the outside faces of the wheels or on to suitable rubbing strips on the car sides.
