Abstract

638,427. Ice-making; hollow cylinders. KNOWLES, F. W. June 16, 1947, No. 15801. Convention date, June 18, 1946. [Classes 29 and 34(i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Liquids such as water, fruit juice, milk, glue &c., are frozen as a film on an endless flexible metal belt 12 mounted by resilient rings 13 on a refrigerated drum 2, the belt being inwardly deflected by external rollers 31 extending across and in contact with the belt to remove the ice film. The drum 2 is supported in the water tank 1 by trunnions one of which 3 forms the inlet and outlet for refrigerant 4 and the other 5 forms a driving connection for the drum, the trunnions being supported by rollers 8, 9 secured to the outside of the tank and being insulated at 11 to prevent the formation of ice thereon. The flexible metal belt 12 is spaced around the drum by rings 13 of sponge rubber and sealing rings 18 supported on blocks 14 of insulating material, a narrow space being left between the drum and the belt which is filled with brine through a pipe 33. The brine is circulated through inclined tubes 26 connecting the end plates 25 of the drum, each tube containing a metal ball 27 which rolls back and forth as the drum rotates to circulate the brine. End stops 28 retain the balls in the tubes. Baffles 30 prevent shortcircuiting of the brine around the ends of the drum. Ice formed on the flexible belt 12 passes under the rollers 31 which deflect the belt to detach the ice so that it passes out through a chute 34. In a modification the brine is circulated by a propeller.
