[Class 97 (i)] In spectacles in which a temple is hinged to the frame by location of a tongue on the end of one member within a recess in the other, resilient means comprising thin sheet-metal portions is located between the bearing surfaces of the hinge, the portions being of a different hardness than the material of the said members and having an initial set which is distorted when the bearing surfaces are urged together to provide a frictional effect on the hinge. As shown in Fig. VI, the temple 41 has ears 39, 40 between which is an insert 42 of resilient metal such as stainless steel to which it is welded. by a tab 46. The end piece 37 has a tab 38 to which the temple is secured by a screw. Alternatively, the tab 38 may be' omitted and the insert 42 secured in a slot in the endpiece. If desired, the insert may be cupped as shown. in Fig. VIII. The ears 39, 40 may be omitted and the insert 42 secured in a recess in, or directly to, the end of the temple, a pair of ears being provided on the endpiece. An insert of the type shown in Fig. VIII may be soldered or welded over the perforated end of the temple and assembled by a screw in a recess in the endpiece. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. XIII, the insert 75, 75a may be welded to the endpiece portions 68, 69, the temple end 73 being secured between them by a screw. The pieces 68, 69 may be integral and the integral portions 75 secured thereto, or the portion 75a may be plane and portion 75 made upwardly convex. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also an alternative in which both portions 75, 75a are plane and the edges of the apertures thereon bent upwardly or downwardly to engage the hinge screw, and the modification shown in Fig. XVII (Cancelled) in which the endpiece 84 is divided at 85 to allow the ends to be drawn together by the hinge screw 86 engaging the temple end 89. In neither of these modifications is there any resilient action. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
