Abstract

Textile material of or containing wool is wetted with an aqueous solution of boric acid and dyed. The treatment with boric acid leads to more even dyeing and protects the material from the harmful action of traces of alkali either from soft water or any previous operation when the wool is dyed by milling acid dyes applied by a process known as "neutral dyeing." The wool is rendered capable of receiving uniform treatment in subsequent treatments such as chlorination. The textile material may be in the form of loose wool, yarns, fabrics or articles. Boric acid up to 10 per cent of the weight of the material may be used. The material to be dyed may be scoured, bleached or pre-chlorinated before being treated with the boric acid solution. After the material has been immersed in the boric acid solution for some time, the requisite quantity of neutral dyestuff may be added and the solution may then be slowly heated to boiling point and kept at that point until the dye has been absorbed to the desired extent. In an example, knitted wool garment shapes, after chlorination and bleaching with hydrogen peroxide, are treated with boric acid solution at 160 DEG F. for 15 mins. Dyestuff is then added and the temperature is gradually raised to the boil and maintained there for 40 mins. Wool and viscose lace fabric is similarly treated and then subjected to a chlorination treatment which improves shrink-resistance. Wool and cotton fabric is impregnated with a solution of boric acid and sodium sulphate at 130 DEG F., and then dyes for the wool and the cotton are added. Wool fabric containing chlorinated and unchlorinated wool is treated with boric acid solution at 110 DEG F. Dyes are added and the solution is raised to boiling. The chlorinated fibres take up the dye very readily whereas the unchlorinated fibres are only slightly coloured.
