Abstract

Paraffin wax compositions, particularly for use as electrical insulating material, comprise a mixture of paraffin wax with 2 to 5 per cent by weight of polyethylene. The mixing may be effected by the addition of finely-divided polyethylene to molten paraffin wax and agitation of the mixture. Alternatively, solutions of polyethylene and paraffin wax may be mixed and the solvent subsequently evaporated. The compositions may have other substances mixed with them, e.g. paraffin oil, fibrous materials, colouring matter, quartz, mica, or talc. The addition of polyethylene to paraffin wax is stated to reduce the brittleness and raise the melting point of the latter. Specification 594,891, [Group IV], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also mixtures of paraffin wax and polyethylene in unspecified proportions and mixtures containing 2-40 per cent by weight of polyethylene. The polyethylene used may be solid or semi-solid. Mixtures of wax and polyethylene containing 10-20 per cent by weight of the former are said to have properties differing but slightly from those of pure polyethylene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Paraffin wax is mixed with 2-5 per cent by weight of polyethylene (see Group III). Specification 594,891 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also mixtures of paraffin wax and polyethylene in unspecified proportions and mixtures of paraffin wax and polyethylene containing 2-40 per cent by weight of polyethylene. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
