Abstract
Benzene hexachloride is prepared by chlorination or benzene in solution in an inert solvent in presence of light at a temperature between the crystallization temperature of benzene and the crystallization temperature of the mixture of benzene with the solvent. The latter is preferably carbon tetrachloride, and in this case the temperature range is 6 DEG to - 47 DEG C. It is also preferred to use more benzene than corresponds with saturation of the solvent at the operating temperature, i.e. solid benzene will be present as a reserve. The process may be operated in a continuous manner by the introduction of stoichiometric amounts of chlorine and fresh benzene into a mixture of benzene and inert solvent saturated with benzene hexachloride, and separation of crystals of C6H6Cl6. In the examples: (1) a mixture of 70 per cent carbon tetrachloride and 30 per cent benzene is chlorinated at - 20 DEG C. with a mixture of chlorine and carbon dioxide, and (2) the continuous process is exemplified using a solution of benzene in carbon tetrachloride at - 40 DEG C. and a solution of chlorine in benzene at - 20 DEG C. Specifications 619,677 and 626,705 are referred to.
