Abstract
Colourless polymers are obtained by polymerizing compositions comprising an a -haloacrylic acid or derivative thereof and a free hydroxyl-containing polymerizable ester of a polyhydric alcohol in an amount of from 0.1 per cent to the limit of its solubility in the acrylic acid compound. The ester differs from the acrylic compound and is interpolymerizable therewith. The preferred a -haloacrylic acid derivative is methyl a -chloracrylate, but other suitable compounds are ethyl, propyl, butylphenyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, allyl and methallyl esters of a -chlor- and a -brom-acrylic acids, and a -chloracrylamide, N-methyl a -chloracrylamide and a -chloracrylonitrile and the corresponding a -bromo compounds. Specified polymerizable esters include ethylene, propylene, butylene and trimethylene glycol, and glyceryl monoesters of acrylic, methacrylic and a -chloracrylic acids, diethylene glycol maleate and fumarate, and diethylene glycol monoesters of angelic and tiglic acids; polyesters of polyhydric alcohols may also be used, e.g. glycerol diacrylate, dimethacrylate and dichloracrylate. the polymerization may be carried out by mass, solution or emulsion methods, if desired with use of light or oxygen-containing polymerization catalysts.
