Abstract

635,864. Resilient mountings. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., BISHOP, J. L. H., HAEFELI, G. C. J., and JONES, G. Nov. 8, 1947, No. 29774. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In rubber flexible mountings of an internalcombustion engine, comprising at each side of the engine, a rectangular rubber block bonded between metal plates forming respectively a bracket on the engine and a part of a bracket secured to a supporting frame or supporting members, there are provided rubber compression blocks, initially compressed and so formed and arranged as to operate in compression to resist torsional movement of the engine which is caused by the reaction of the driving impulses at slow speed. In the arrangement shown, a rectangular rubber block D, bonded between brass plates d and r, is secured between inclined flanges a and f of brackets A and F mounted respectively on an engine B and a chassis frame member G. A trapezoidal rubber block H, bearing on a laterally-extending portion of the flange f is bonded on its upper face to a brass plate h. The latter is secured to a web c of a sub-bracket C, which is also secured to the flange a. The block H provides relatively strong resistance to torsional movements of the engine at low speeds thereof, whilst at high speeds such movements are absorbed by the block D acting in shear, and by the fly-wheel of the engine. The block H is initially lightly loaded and its shape is such as to give an increasing load/deflection ratio for increasing loads. One or more shims J may be placed between the web c and plate h and the axes of the blocks D and H are such that each is tangential to a circle described from the longitudinal axis of torsional vibration of the engine.
