Abstract

635,832. Magnetrons. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 25, 1947, No. 5435. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A cavity magnetron has tuning means longitudinally disposed in at least one of its resonant cavities and projecting into end spaces, and means in the end spaces for supporting the tuning means and retaining them against longitudinal displacement in the cavities. In Fig. 2 the tuning elements comprise bimetallic strips 26 rigidly supported in each cavity from rings 18 in the anode end spaces. Fig. 6 shows a cross-section of one of the cavities; the strip 26 is wrapped round an insulator 23 which is heated by a filament 22 connected to the rings 18. As the filament is heated or cooled, the strip 26 winds or unwinds and alters the resonant frequency of the cavity. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the tuning is electronic and the tuning elements are thermionic filaments 22a, the emission of which can be controlled either by the current through them or by grids 30 supported from rings 18a in the anode end-spaces.
