Abstract

634,864. Closing filled bags. CONSOLIDATED PACKAGING MACHINERY CORPORATION. July 15,1947, No. 18789. Convention date, April 8, 1939. [Class 94 (i)] A machine for closing filled bags comprises a row of adhesive-carrying fingers adapted to be pressed into contact with a surface of a filled bag and arranged to be flexible and resilient in order that the fingers may conform to irregularities in the bag surface, and means for causing relative movement between the fingers and the bag surface while the fingers are pressed thereagainst, to spread the adhesive. As applied to the bag closing machine disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,175,557, the adhesive-applying member comprises a thin plate 55 of metal or other suitable resilient material, formed with a series of slots 57 which define fingers 56. The plate 55 is bolted to a cross bar 53 carried by a head 13 which is pivotally mounted on the end of one arm 16 of a bell crank 16, 18, itself pivotally mounted on the machine frame at 17. The bell crank 16, 18 is oscillated by means of a link 20 carrying a follower 21 associated with a cam 24 driven by a camshaft 23. The outer end of the head 13 is connected by a link 29 with one arm of a bell crank 28, 30, the other arm of which carries a follower 31 held in engagement with a cam 32 by a spring 33. The cross bar 53 also carries a plate 59 the outer edge 60 of which terminates just above the outer ends of the fingers 56. A bag-folding member 14 carries a guide channel 37 at its forward end and carries oppositely-disposed studs 40 which engage guide channels 41 in the machine frame. A cross-bar 42 carried by the member 14 is arranged to ride upon the upper face of an abutment 43 rigid with the frame, under the pressure of a compression spring 45 when the member 14 is reciprocated by a linkage 51, 50, 49, associated with a cam 47 on the camshaft 23. During the foremost part of the reciprocation of the member 14, the cross-bar 42 reaches the end of the abutment 43 and is forced down the edge 44 thereof by the spring 45, the member 14 pivoting about the studs 40. Operation. A bag 10 is fed to the station shown in Fig. 1, the bag mouth having been previously collapsed and folded into the position shown. Forward movement of the member 14 causes the cross-bar 42 to ride over the edge 44 and causes the channel 37 to engage the bag mouth and so press the turned-down bag portion 11 against the upstanding neck portion 12. The bell crank 16, 18 moves the head 13 from a position 13<SP>1</SP> in which the fingers 56 contact an adhesive supply roller 25, to the position shown, in which the extremities of the fingers 56 lie at the apex of the angle between the neck 12 of the bag mouth and the top of the bag, and the edge 60 of the plate 59 engages the turned-down portion of the bag mouth. Further forward movement of the member 14 causes the mouth to be folded over as shown in Fig. 8 the fingers 56 being drawn at the same time over the bag top. Pressure of the fingers on the bag top is maintained by the action of the linkage 29, 28, 30 and the cam 32 in order to ensure the distribution of glue when the surface is uneven.
