Abstract

A method of casting aluminium on to bodies of iron or steel includes the step of first coating the iron or steel with aluminium. The body is cleaned to remove grease, preferably shot-blasted or pickled to roughen the surface, coated with a flux such as zinc chloride and immersed for about one minute in a bath of zinc containing 0.15 per cent aluminium at a temperature of from 430 DEG -480 DEG C. The aluminium content of this bath must be replenished from time to time. After draining for a few seconds, the zinc-coated body is plunged into a bath of commercially pure aluminium at a temperature between 680 DEG and 700 DEG C for about fifteen minutes. This has the effect of removing the zinc and providing a coating of aluminium.
