Abstract

634,483. Cable joints. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd., and SANDERS, H. R. E. Dec. 5, 1947, No. 32196. [Class 38 (i)] A submarine cable repeater housing comprises rigid tubular elements A, A1, A2, each provided with a detachable female joint component C at one end and a detachable male joint component D at the other, which components engage corresponding components in the contiguous ends of the elements and the male and female components have spherical mating surfaces to limit the angular displacement of the adjacent elements. The components C are screwed at B on to the elements and have threaded thereon the female portions F, of ball-and-socket joints which slide between the surfaces S1, S, on the component D and on the joint male portion E carried by it. The bore of the ball-and-socket joints is less than that of the elements. Alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown), the bore equals or is greater than that of the elements and has a strong internal spring to limit the movement of the ball-andsocket joints. Seals may be provided at the joints to prevent ingress of moisture. To prevent the screwed parts working loose they may be secured by compound or locking washers. Specifications 619,424 and 629,761 are referred to.
